Trump wins another Club Championship

What a roll this man is on at the moment! President of America, geopolitical deal maker and yet another golf club championship in the bag, even though it’s at one of his clubs. All quite staggering on the golf front, because I think about ten years ago it was quoted that he had 19 club championships under his belt. This is almost unbelievable. Kind of like him being President of the USA in fact.

Any golfer knows this is not feasible, not that de facto some absolute numpty is president of the USA, but to win so many club championships. I mean I do know that Brian Erskine, a fellow caddie in St Andrews, did win the Merchants of Edinburgh club championship 9 times but that is quite extraordinary and he is a very capable golfer with a sound swing. I will leave the rest to you.

Now, I had a most wretched time last Friday in the semi-finals of the Winter Foursomes at Mortonhall and just couldn’t hit a ball for toffee. It was woeful. However I proceeded to the driving range on Saturday morning in St Andrews and tried a wee tip which I’d picked up on Instagram. I was booming drives away over 300 yards on the screen. Now that’s not bad for a 62 year old bloke. I was indeed a whole different man to the previous day. My swing was solid. However can I carry this forward?

And this is the beauty and challenge and allure of golf. We keep getting these moments when we have ‘got it’. They are rare of course.

I mean we are not all Donald Trump who seems to have found something that works period and can bag scores of club championships at his will.

However I did hear that his caddie’s sobriquet is Pele.

Gid get me a train.
